Visiting an Inmate

The Whitehorse Correctional Centre encourages visiting between inmates, family and friends.

  • Visitors and visits must be approved by Corrections
  • Visits are 1 hour in length
  • Children under 19 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian
  • Visits may be open (no physical barrier between the inmate and visitor) or secure (physical barrier)

How to get on the visitor list

  • The inmate submits a list of people they would like to visit, the list must be approved by Corrections
  • When approved, you must fill out a Visitor Application Form  in person at the Correctional Centre or by fax if you live outside of Whitehorse
  • You will be screened for security clearance
  • When you are approved the inmate will contact you
  • Before visiting call to book an appointment (by Friday for weekend visits)

When you visit

  • Check in at reception
  • Provide government issued photo ID
  • You may be searched or scanned
  • You may not have physical contact with the inmate, except for a brief embrace at the beginning and end of the visit. Mouth-to-mouth contact is not allowed
  • Follow the directions or instructions of Correctional Officers at all times

*Emergency or special visits may be accommodated at the discretion of the Officer in Charge.

Denial of Visitation

Corrections has the authority to deny a visit or suspend visiting privileges for the following reasons:

  • Insufficient ID
  • Inappropriate clothing
  • Refusing to submit to a scan/search
  • Intoxication
  • Loud or unruly behaviour, abusive language, excessive complaining
  • Excessive physical contact between visitor and inmate
  • The inmate refuses to see the visitor
  • Outstanding charges, warrants or court ordered restrictions
  • Under investigation for illegal activity
  • In possession of contraband
  • Negative influence on the rehabilitation of the offender
  • Threat to the security of the Correctional Centre

If you are denied visiting privileges you will be provided with the reasons in writing. You have a right to appeal that decision to the Superintendent.
