Information on the Correctional Centre Building and Supervision Style

The Whitehorse Correctional Centre (WCC) opened in March 2012. It is a modern “Generation Three” style correctional facility that includes safety features and design that are second to none in Canada. WCC keeps the public safe from offenders when they need to be incarcerated and keeps staff, justice partners and volunteers safe when working with inmates on their healing and reintegration.

  • Three-storeys , 73,195-square-feet
  • Located approximately 5 kms north of the city centre on Range Rd
  • Four living units for men and one for women
  • Segregation and secure living units
  • Healing room and other programming spaces
  • Built to maximum security standard, while allowing staff to manage inmates at varying security levels
  • Leed Silver standard
  • Potential inmate population of 190

Safety and Supervision

  • Compact design makes staff movement and response extremely efficient
  • Over 400 cameras and a central control system allows for visual monitoring of all areas
  • Inmates sleep in individual or two-person cells which are clustered on a self-contained living unit
  • Inmates access programs, services, meals, fresh air yard and gyms on their living unit which enhances safety by minimizing movement within the Correctional Centre and contact between incompatible inmates
  • In house video remand, medical and dental facilities reduce need to transport inmates to the community for court and health services
  • Enhanced direct supervision means that a Correctional Officer is present on the living unit to provide continuous monitoring of behaviour and ongoing communication with inmates. This style of supervision enhances safety and allows Correctional Officers to be “agents of change” by working directly with inmates.
