The Corrections Act consultation is a six-month public consultation on the key proposals that could be reflected in a new Corrections Act and regulations. Consultations are scheduled to occur throughout the Yukon between November 2007 and May 2008. The information gathered during the consultation will help in drafting a new Corrections Act and its supporting regulations.
The need to replace the Act emerged during the Corrections Consultation and was one of the recommendations in the Corrections Action Plan. Re-writing the Corrections Act is an action item identified in the Correctional Redevelopment Strategic Plan. This plan was endorsed by the Government of Yukon and Yukon First Nations at the Yukon Forum on December 8, 2006 and was released following the forum. The action item states as follows:
Modernize the Corrections Act and regulations so that they are in line with the mission, vision and values of the Department.
The focus is on completing the consultation for the preparation of new legislation by autumn 2008.
