About ISO

The Investigations and Standards Office (ISO) was established in January 2010 with the proclamation of the new Corrections Act 2009 and Regulations. ISO’s mandate is to provide independent oversight of the Corrections branch of the Yukon Department of Justice through investigations and inspections.

ISO’s mission and key responsibilities:

• Provide independent oversight of Corrections by carrying out investigations and inspections;
• Ensure a timely, fair and impartial review mechanism for client complaints related to community and correctional services;
• Reviews of inmate discipline on appeal; and
• Recommendations to improve policies, procedures and correctional practices.

The Director of ISO may investigate any matter with respect to the administration
of the Corrections Act at the request of the Assistant Deputy Minister of Community Justice and Public Safety or on the Director’s own motion.

ISO has unrestricted access to inmates, documents, and the correctional centre and can compel corrections staff to answer questions and provide information and evidence.  ISO is neutral and impartial in carrying out its’ mandate and all complaints to ISO are considered privileged correspondence.
