Find out about the Indigenous Court Worker Program

The Indigenous Court Worker Program supports fair, equitable and culturally sensitive treatment of all Indigenous people involved in the criminal justice system.

Indigenous court workers can provide you with support and information, if you're an Indigenous person involved in the justice system as a:

  • victim;
  • accused;
  • offender; or
  • family member.

You do not have to go through the justice system alone.

What does an Indigenous court worker do?

Indigenous court workers can:

  • help victims or offenders understand the justice system and how it works;
  • explain the:
    • documents
    • forms;
    • directions; or
    • conditions given by the Court.
  • help you understand the nature of the charges brought against you;
  • help you apply for Legal Aid;
  • provide you with in-court support;
  • give you information about alternative methods of justice, such as:
    • sentencing circles; and
    • restorative justice where available and appropriate;
  • refer you to other community support services, such as:
    • counselling; and
    • alcohol and drug treatment centres;
  • assist you with bail applications, where applicable;
  • respond to Gladue Report requests;
  • help justice officials to understand:
    • the culture, values and customs of Indigenous people; and
    • the social and economic situation of each client;
  • improve communication between:
    • Indigenous clients;
    • communities; and
    • the justice system;
  • work to create community partnerships;
  • work on committees;
  • give presentations and workshops; and
  • assist youth in all aspects of the justice system, especially when a parent is unavailable.
