Yukon Police Council Membership

 

The Minister of Justice is now reviewing applications from the interested persons that applied to be members of the newly created Yukon Police Council.

 

This Council will act as a liaison between citizens, the Minister of Justice and the Commanding Officer for RCMP “M” Division (Yukon), and will make recommendations to the Minister and the Commanding Officer on issues relating to the delivery of policing services in Yukon.

 

The deadline for applications was July 28, 2011.

 

Applicants should have a strong interest in community-police relationship building.  The minister will consider applications that indicate:

 

  • Knowledge about, and interest in community issues;
  • An understanding of the complexities of policing;
  • First Nation community knowledge and understanding;
  • Community leadership experience;
  • An understanding of the differential impact policing services may have on First Nations citizens, women, and vulnerable citizens;
  • Commitment to fairness, avoiding conflict of interest, maintaining neutrality and objectivity;
  • Willingness and availability to meet time-commitments related to board duties and to attend meetings in Whitehorse and other Yukon communities;
  • Willingness to contribute to consensus solutions.
